I’ve been travelling as well as can be expected for a busy working mum who is trying to also fit in studies for a Diploma of Business … until now, that is.

I have my first assessment due on the 2nd September which happens to coincide with the launch of a new eCourse I have created called THE FUSSY EATING BUNDLE.

Between creating the course and marketing it, blogging, seeing clients, and of course upholding the household/homemaker duties (which includes ferrying the kids around to all their activities), I am struggling to complete my assessment.

I’ve made the active choice NOT TO WORRY because it’s beyond my capacity to do it all! The course and assessment are important to me, and I will get to it, but there are other commitments which need my attention right now. Funnily enough, I owe my realistic approach to some of the insights absorbed through some of the activities on the course. Prioritising seems to be a skill I’m developing!

Another skill I’ve picked up from the course is ‘asking for help’. Not usually a strength of mine, but lately I’ve witnessed the benefits by enlisting help during this extra busy times. My kids have stepped it up with their chores doing more folding, cooking and washing dishes and hubby has upped his portion of household duties also. In terms of running my business, hiring an assistant to help with the overload has been a god send.

I guess this means I’m learning.

I’m also going to ever so politely ask my mentor on the course for her help too, in the form of

“Can I have an extension please”

Wish me luck!

Does the rhythm of my day look familiar to you?

the breakfast/lunchbox/school scramble

me-time in the form of a lovely thirty minute coastal walk

breakfast and shower

get stuck into work for the day, entrepreneur-style, which includes tidying, hanging out washing, cooking and taking calls from family members who don’t actually get that although you are at home you are actually working!

make dinner (there’s no time later because of after school activities)

kids home for afternoon snacks, tell them ten times to get ready for their activity and then out the door we all go.

home, eat dinner, watch Masterchef, ask kids to brush teeth 52 times, kids bedtime.

husband comes home to a romantic candle lit dinner for two, wine poured and Jeff Buckley’s soulful tunes are playing in the background.(Got you! As if!)

What really happens is that hubby gets home and serves his own dinner cos I’m plonked in front of my heater giving my Business Mamas Diploma of Business course some attention, even if it’s just half an hour.

As a mum, I’ve learnt to grab whatever time I can get, and the course is designed specifically with mums in mind, so it can be done in short chunks.

Fitting in my studies has proven to be challenging, and some nights I’m so tired that I’ll settle into a taped Modern Family episode with the hubby instead, or I’ll need to continue working because my health coaching clients can’t Skype until after work.

But one thing I’ve got on my side is discipline. I pride myself on it and I work extremely well to deadlines, which is also keeping me on track. My kids constantly ask if I got my assignments done, so their interest indicates that I have their support. I like to think I’m modelling positive attributes to them like commitment, passion and discipline rather than “mum’s too busy to put me to sleep tonight”!

Any other study mama’s out there? What helps to keep you motivated?

It was only a few years ago that I really started to look into my future. As a parent – actually, no, let’s call that ‘individual’, because I am still one, my role and life have been both subtlely and mind-blowingly changing over the last decade. Prior to having kids, I was kept completely busy with my casting consultancy and photographers businesses. And once the kids came along, my ‘busyness’ merely changed its shape into full-time mother and home-maker.

But as my kids started to grow up, I started to wonder if I’d need something to fill the void when I hit the ‘Big 5-0’, and the kids have left home (please God…), I’ve been out of the workforce in, like, forever, and the husband starts taking an odd interest in sports cars …

My decision was fairly easy in a way. Given the enjoyment and fulfilment I experienced in my previous work life, starting a new business was a natural decision. The question was what type it would be.

In pursuing my passion for nutrition and wellbeing, I decided to study to become a health coach four years ago, establishing my business Brenda Janschek Health and Lifestyle once the course was completed. To be honest, I had no real plan, but I thought I’d love to do pantry makeovers. It didn’t take long to realise that this service alone was not going to reach everyone I wanted, nor make me a sustainable living.

Almost three years on, and I still run my signature pantry makeover service as well as other successful offerings, and I’m much clearer about my passion and my direction. I have to admit, it’s been hard, and I have wanted to give up 100 times, but bottom line, I absolutely love what I do.

I love connecting with my beautiful Facebook community of like-minded spirits, I love working closely with women in my one-on-one coaching and reaching hundreds of women through my online courses.

I love the messages of gratitude from those whose lives I’ve helped in some way, I love recipe creating, blogging and being a part of a movement of wellness warriors who are all striving for positive change in this world. And I love how all of my work is at one with my core beliefs and values.

Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it. Buddha (563 – 483 BC)

One part has been missing however, how to make it truly financially viable and therefore sustainable. Which is why I jumped at the chance to do my Diploma of Business through Business Mamas.

Pukka Tea and Chewy-Choc Banana Cookies help me concentrate!

So while I’m overloaded as a mum and entrepreneur, I’m optimistic that doing this course will help me become clearer about the best way to propel my business forward. I hope that my studies will provide the direction my business needs to become more efficient, and provide the tools necessary to support it’s success.

My ultimate dream is about creating positive change to the health and wellbeing of precious families all over the world and so affect a change for the generations to come, so wish me luck!

I truly don’t know what will come of it, but am grateful that the opportunity to do this course has come into my life and to have you on this journey with me.
