Porridge

Why it’s already good …

Oats are rich in the B-complex vitamins and anti-oxidant vitamin E. They also contain soluble fibre which helps to keep you feeling satisfied as well as help the digestive system along. Soluble fibre also provides a food source for beneficial bacteria in the gut.

How you can make it better

Soak oats overnight in warm water and yogurt, kefir, or buttermilk to neutralise phytic acid. Phytic acid is found in the outer layer of grains and blocks the absorption of essential minerals which can lead to deficiencies.

Grind up some flaxseeds and mix through the porridge to provide a good ratio of Omega 3’s. These are relatively tasteless.

Once cooked, mix in some butter or cream, whose fat-soluble activators provide the catalyst for mineral absorption and they make it super tasty!

Ensure you add a natural sweetener like pure maple syrup, raw honey, or a sprinkle of rapadura sugar rather than a highly refined, processed sweetener.

Top with blueberries which are full of antioxidants and research suggests that in addition to protecting against heart disease and diabetes and improving brain function, they may also help reduce visceral “toxic” belly fat—a type of fat that has been linked to obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Add cinnamon to stabilise blood sugar and for extra natural sweetness.

Grab my Pimped up Porridge recipe here.

Spaghetti Bolognese/Meatballs

Why it’s already good

Great source of protein – the building blocks for our body.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, a nutrient in cooked tomatoes that has been shown in laboratory studies to slow the growth of – and even kill – prostate cancer cells. It may also combat heart disease and diabetes.

How you can make it better

Cooking the tomatoes with good fat, like olive oil, helps the body absorb more lycopene.

Buy the best quality mincemeat you can afford, preferably grass-fed or organic because what the animals are fed, and whether they have access to sunlight and pastures make a big difference to their vitamin and mineral composition.

We all know this one, but it really works! Add shredded vegetables like zucchini, carrots, mushroom and, if you can get away with it, kale which is one of the most nutritious plant foods in existence!

Swap to whole grain spelt pasta (spelt is an ancient grain) which is high fibre, high protein, wheat-free and lower in gluten than regular wheat pasta.

Here is a delicious recipe for Summer Baked Meatballs with Kale and Juicy Tomato Sauce

Scrambled eggs on toast (great for breakfast, lunch or dinner!)

Why they’re already good

Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on earth and a complete protein source and a great source of vitamins and minerals, including the super absorbable ‘heme’ iron.

How you can make it better

Try adding in poached eggs, soft boiled eggs, and eggs over easy into the repertoire. Leave the yolks nice and runny. The less you cook eggs, and the lower the temperature used when cooking, the better access you have to their nutrition. This is because high heat kills off lots of vitamins and minerals.

Use a good quality sourdough bread for the toast. Sourdough is fermented, digestible, and promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut, giving the whole immune system a boost. Look for long-fermented sourdough (48-hours pref) made from stoneground (or equivalent wholegrain) flours.

Add a good spread of grass-fed butter to the sourdough (as well as to cook the eggs in) as a source of good fat. The greener the pastures, the more Vitamins (A,D, and K) the butter will contain. Or you can use avocado, another beautiful source of good fat which contains a rich array of heart-healthy ingredients.

Try to layer the toast with some baby spinach and slices of tomato both full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants or fry up some mushrooms, all make a tasty accompaniment to eggs.

Always make sure you go for good quality pastured eggs. Some of my favourite brands are shared here.

Believing in the incredible power of food as medicine I undertook and committed myself to raising them on a diet of nutritious, home cooked meals, even though cooking three meals a day from scratch is A LOT of work (not to mention the dishes).

They are now strapping 15 and 17 year olds who are entirely capable of cooking for themselves (get your kids in the kitchen as young as possible! but I still do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to cooking.

I just can’t stop.

I can’t stop because I love knowing that despite how much take-out, processed foods, missed meals, alcohol (!), they’re having out there in the world, that home is where I can always make sure they well get a proper, meal full of goodness to nourish every cell in their bodies.

I can’t stop because they have spread their wings and are flying so very quickly away and deep in my soul I already miss them and cooking for them makes me feel connected to them and hold on to them a little longer.

I can’t stop because I feel joy seeing their faces light up when they hear they’re favourite Creamy Pasta Bake or Mexican Beef and Bean Burritos is for dinner.

I can’t stop because they are so self sufficient and independent in every way that feeding them feels like one of the last few things I can still do for them to show them how much I love them.

I can’t stop because food is love in my heart and my home and it always will be this way.

Which means the old Bento Box may no longer cut it.

I’ve been getting lots of messages from parents asking me what lunch boxes my teens take to school.

Parents who understand the importance of good nutrition for growing teens but have to somehow convince them to take a packed lunch rather than money for the canteen.

Not to mention that most kids still take their lunch wrapped in plastic wrap or in zip lop bags, not really understanding the impact this single use plastic has on our earth.

The challenge is to pick a non-toxic lunch box, that’s easy to clean, kind to the earth, and which won’t make our teens stick out like a sore thumb at school.

NB: I’ve always bought from and affiliated with Biome Stores because their vision is to preserve a safe, healthy environment on this wonderous planet for now, and for those who come after us.’ And because they have very strict standards and go to great lengths to source products that are not only free from toxins and all synthetic preservatives and fragrances. My kids are now 15 and 17yrs old (!) and here’s what they’ve been using the past few years …

U Konserve Rectangle Container with Divider

My kids starting using the U Konserve container in high school and it’s still going strong. It’s great for salads, leftovers, wraps, sushi, rice paper rolls …. The removable divider is great when you want to divide food, like sandwiches and snacks. These are lightweight and easy to wash. I think it’s the plastic (recyclable) lid rather than stainless steel which gets it over the line for my teens. U Konserve have a heap of cool looking containers of all different shapes and sizes which you can check out here.

When it comes to sandwiches, my teens still use reusable sandwich wraps in different designs I bought years ago. These Sandwich pockets are a great alternative if you’re kids are concerned about fitting in with everyone else at school. They’re reusable, low-tox and replace those single use plastic zip lock bags which clog our landfill.

Other

When it comes to insulated bags, we keep it low key black for my son with this Packit Freezable Classic Lunchbox.

A good alternative is the Sistema range of insulated bags which you can get from supermarkets and places like K-Mart.

The key to water bottles for teens is no babyish logo and no spouts. Just undo the top and take a swig and extra points if it’s insulated, let alone triple insulated keeping things cold for 72 hours and hot for 14hrs. Oh, not to mention best go for the most unobtrusive colour. These bottles are long lasting and top notch quality.

Being in my early 50’s, my personal skin challenges are around aging and dehydration, whereas when I was a teenager it was all related to puberty, hormone imbalances and haywire skin! Teen skin issues are mostly centred around oily skin due to overactive oil glands, which can cause blocked pores resulting in breakouts and blackheads.

At this age, they also can shed too many dead skin cells which can also clog pores and lead to blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. Then there’s the issue of bacteria getting caught inside the pores causing inflammation, redness, and irritation, basically the start of acne.

It’s easy to see why it’s important for our teens to get into a good skin care routine!

Using natural products becomes even more important because young skin is still sensitive and delicate. At the very least, I recommend a daily cleanser and moisturiser, plus gentle exfoliation once a week. We do love a soothing face mask every 2-3 weeks as well.

Now you know how I feel about any products full of harmful chemicals #nogozone but when we’re talking teens, I enforce this philosophy even more stringently because the last thing we want to do to our kids when they are going through massive changes in their development is bombard their growing bodies with harmful chemicals.

Have a look at this youth-led study looking into personal care products as a source of exposure to potentially endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and benzophenone-3 (BP-3) for adolescent girls.

Below I’ve put together our favourite tried and tested skincare products which my daughter loves and which keeps her health safe. All of these products apply to my teenage son as well but good luck getting him to use them!

Cleansers

Some of you may know that I discovered my path to wellness through my experience with infertility.

This painful experience became my gift, the catalyst which ignited my incredible passion for wholefoods, cooking from scratch, and food as medicine.

From deep in my heart I felt the privilege of being in charge of nourishing my children and raising them to love real food. Of giving them the best chance to thrive and be well throughout their lives.

Before long I felt called to share my passion and knowledge beyond my family. I formalised my education by studying to be a health coach and my blog and business with it’s various offerings came to life and became the vehicle from which I helped other busy mums to raise happy, healthy children.

My message revolved around the power of wholefoods, techniques to combat fussy eating, the dangers of additives, sugar and processed, packaged foods. I educated about ‘bliss points’, the corruption of the food industry and food marketing.

All the while I remained vigilant about the foods that could and couldn’t be eaten by my own children.

Until it backfired.

Until I discovered my kids were hiding particular foods from me.

Until my daughter would throw empty packets of Tiny Teddies wrappers deep into the bin while glancing guiltily in my direction in case she were caught.

Until we found our son, who said he was meeting a friend to play soccer at the park, on his own at the park with a slushie from McDonalds.

This was my wake up call.

Though motivated by only the best of intentions by wanting the best health I could offer my family, through the over-emphasis of ideals around food and a dogmatic approach, I had unwittingly created pressure, shame, fear and guilt around food.

Which was the LAST thing I ever wanted, because what a slippery slope it can be to dysfunctional eating and food disorders.

I have spent the last two years unravelling what I created.

Initially it proved to be confronting. Letting go of old beliefs and fears was challenging.

But this year I have finally found my stride.

No more lectures about food choices.

No judgement around any type of food.

No more food labels.

No more, “good food”, “bad food”, “junk food”, “everyday food”, “sometimes food” …

Food is just food.

All foods can be incorporated as part of a healthy diet.

I have been releasing my kids from food pressure and food restriction, allowing them freedom in their own choices.

As a result they are much more relaxed and eating much more intuitively rather than by a set of rules.

2018 was the year when I began to trust that my children would carry the healthy foundations I had set up at home throughout their lives and I stopped fearing the negative effects of certain types of food.

While I still 100% believe in the power of food to prevent illness and disease, in helping our children flourish mentally and physically – allowing them to adapt, lead, think, create and change, we also celebrate food as fun, connection, memories, happiness, smiles and excitement.

I now believe that without a good pinch of joy, good nutrition will allude us all.

I’ll admit, I’m still a work in progress. Seeing kids choose soft drinks still pains me, but with each deep breath I am able to remind myself to focus on the bigger picture.

There is no doubt there is a real loss of cooking skills amongst our generation and as a result, our own children’s generation.

The busier life gets, the more we rely on processed packaged foods to get us by.

Which not only means we are missing out on nourishing our families properly, but also that we are slowly losing the art of cooking simple, delicious meals from scratch and passing this lifelong skill onto our children.

In 1984 we made 72 percent of our dinners from scratch, but by 2008 that number dropped to 57 percent …

What will happen with cooking in the future?

And all the while obesity is on the rise. And increasingly, we are seeing more illness and disease creeping in earlier and earlier with our children.

Getting kids in the kitchen goes a long way to improving children’s health and wellbeing both now and in the future.

I would love to see cooking classes become compulsory again in high schools, and I am thrilled my son has elected to do food tech at high school as he delights in food creation, presentation and eating!

In fact, all that time in the kitchen with me has meant my kids have turned out to be a massive help when it comes to cooking, often helping out with all the meals of the day which substantially lightens my load. We have a good time in the kitchen together too.

The school holiday’s provide a great opportunity to embrace your kids in the kitchen so why not give it a go with this round up of the best healthy recipes to make with your kids these school holidays.

By teaching your kids to cook you’ll also be …

boosting their maths and science skills

fostering their social skills

teaching them about healthy food and good eating habits

building responsibility and independence

creating great memories and conversation

improving their reading and comprehension

taking inadvertent steps to unfuss their fussy eating

and learning a skill that will benefit them for life by keeping them well and happy, and will also one day pass this skill on to their own children

Here’s to our budding chefs changing the future of health and well being.

Let’s get their health back on track.

Guest Post by Dr. Elise Bialylew, Founder and host of Mindful in May.

With invisible umbilical cords connecting us to our devices 24/7, staying focused is becoming increasingly difficult.

Our attention buzzes around with the restlessness of a mosquito, fluttering between emails, Facebook, Twitter and text messages.

Many of us are suffering from what Dr Edward Hallowell, a psychiatrist specialising in ADHD, calls ‘Attention Deficit Trait’.

He describes it as ‘a condition induced by modern life, in which you’ve become so busy attending to so many inputs and outputs that you become increasingly distracted, irritable, impulsive, restless and, over the long term, underachieving.

We need to reflect on our relationships with technology, not just for the sake of improving our productivity, but also in relation to our health.

Linda Stone, a technology thought leader and ex-Microsoft researcher discovered a condition she described as ‘email apnoea’, a pattern of breath-holding that occurs while emailing.

It’s a condition similar to sleep apnoea, which causes disturbed breathing during sleep.

The problem with holding your breath is that it activates your stress response, leading to increased cortisol levels that can have a negative effect on your health.

So becoming more mindful of our relationship with technology is going to improve our general wellbeing as well as our focus.

As a society, the constant distraction of technology is also affecting the health and safety of children under our care.

In 2007 the iPhone was released, and according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over the following three years nonfatal injuries to children under five increased by twelve per cent.

Craig Palsson, professor of economics at Yale University, investigated whether there was a link between the two. In 2014 he published an alarming paper entitled ‘That Smarts! Smartphones and Child Injuries’, which revealed a connection: technology was increasingly distracting parents, and by extension impacting on the wellbeing of their children.

If we wish to remain healthy, happy and clear-minded, we need to upgrade our ‘inner technology’ to meet the demands of our increasingly complex, hyperconnected world.

Mindfulness can significantly help with addictions ranging from smoking to social media, and it can help us manage the distractions and urges that constantly threaten our capacity to focus.

Take a moment to reflect on these questions to assess your level of addiction to social media.

These are the same questions I used to ask many of my patients to determine whether they had addiction disorders, taken from a list of criteria in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM).

Are you are spending increasing amounts of time on social media and often longer than you intend to be using it?

Have you wanted to stop using social media but found you
were unable to?

Do you spend a lot of time on social media?

Do you have strong urges or cravings to use social media that are hard to resist?

Do you repeatedly find that some of your major tasks or responsibilities are being interrupted by your social media
use (i.e. getting distracted when you should be working)?

Do you continue to use social media despite it having a negative impact on areas of your life (i.e. staying up late at night and not getting enough sleep, having a child or partner point out your use of social media, using social media while driving)?

Have you stopped or reduced doing things that you previously did (work, recreation or social) because of your social media use?

Do you use social media repeatedly even when it puts you or those around you in danger (i.e. while driving or in the playground with your child)?

Have you continued use of social media despite knowing
that it’s causing problems in your life (either physical or psychological)?

Do you need to use social media more often to get a sense
 of satisfaction?

Do you feel withdrawal symptoms after being disconnected
from social media that can be relieved by using it?

If you answered yes to two or three questions it is likely that you’re mildly addicted, four to five indicates a moderate addiction, and six to seven indicates a severe addiction.

If you suspect that you may be addicted to technology, try to bring more mindfulness to your relationship with it through these four steps which will help you start breaking the automatic habits that maintain the addiction.

Set an intention

Set an intention around changing your behaviour in relation to technology and think about practical steps
you can take to make it more difficult to access. Consider taking the social media apps off your phone, or commit to sleeping without your mobile in the bedroom (even for just a few nights to see what effect it has).

Recognise

The next time you feel the urge to check social media, take a pause. Recognise that you are caught in craving. Count to ten before continuing to use it, as a way of interrupting the urge for long enough to allow it to naturally pass.

Investigate

When we crave something, there’s often an uncomfortable emotion or feeling that’s present which we are trying
to avoid. Take a moment to bring the attention to your body. Sense any emotions or feelings that are present (agitation, stress, loneliness, boredom). Once you identify the emotion, silently label it to yourself. This brings more mindful awareness to your current state and may lead you closer to the underlying issue that might be driving the urges.

Unhook

Mindfulness allows you to consciously notice what is happening as it is happening – and pause before you act on your urges. In this way it helps disrupt automatic habits and addiction loops, and allows new habit pathways to form.

As technology develops exponentially, being mindful of our relationship with it is going to be the difference between being its slave or its master.

Are they exhausted, getting sick, falling apart, over it! It’s such a tough time of year.

Last week my daughter woke up, practically slept walk out of her room with big bags under her eyes and for the first time ever asked if she could have a day off school.

She told me later that day that she was surprised that I agreed to her taking a “wellbeing day” but I explained that I could see that she desperately needed that day, a day away from addition and subtraction, all the noise and school yard politics…

She stayed home and played the piano, watched her favourite shows, ate her favourite food, read books and lazed about all day. By the time evening rolled around she was herself again, pepped up and ready for her nippers training session.

I had given my daughter permission to relax every fibre of her being and, in doing so, reclaim her fight.

And that’s something I’ve found about self-care, we often need someone else to jump-start it for us.

Giving ourselves permission — to rest, to recharge, to realize self-indulgence isn’t actually self-indulgent at all.

This is a concept I know is especially hard for women.

We ALL need to remember to exhale….we’re all pushed to do too much, we all need a break. Kids and parents alike.

We don’t want our kids to learn from us that they have to work their butts of all the time until they burn out. We want them to tune in to what they really need and grant themselves permission to take a break.

As busy mums though, how do we take time out when we don’t seem to have five minutes to ourselves from sunrise to sunset?

Let me ask you an important question.

Has your busy-ness become the thing that defines you? Has it become a badge of honour?

Our culture has decided that we need to be Wonder Women and so we believe that being busy is what makes us worthy.

We need to SHAKE THIS IDEA OFF!

Because while we remain slaves to our to-do lists and exist in get-it-done mode, we are forgetting to live a meaningful and healthy life meant to be enjoyed.

How do I shake it off though Brenda? Who’s going to get it all done for me?

Well, I suggest you take a good look at your to-do list and make some honest decisions about what’s really non-negotiable and what you can say bye-bye to. Eg: Do you really need to organise those birthday photos into a special album? Or go to that event if no one is going to get hurt by your absence?

And/or..

Find some support in the areas you feel like you could use some help, then decide who you can ask to support you in those areas. Eg: My mum comes over once every fortnight and I never say no to her bringing food for my family which usually lasts a couple days and creates some much needed time and space. Say YES to help!

I’d also love to invite you to join my FREE LIVE WORKSHOP which I host with Naturopath Naomi Judge on what we consider to be the most important topic when it comes to Women’s health and wellbeing – and that’s the importance of self care.

After all, having too little rest is a major contributor to expanding that waistline, IBS, gas, bloating, headaches, depression, heart problems, decreased sex drive ……

WHY YOU NEED TO LEAVE GUILT AT THE DOOR AND EMBRACE SELF-CARE
Learn to love, nourish and respect yourself with these 5 smart habits

In this workshop we explore:

Where this guilt comes from and why we feel it (so important to recognise this so you can move on).

How lack of self-care creates stress and some serious health issues you shouldn’t ignore.

How you can get clear on a specific, urgent WHY, your sense of purpose, your capacity to fulfil your mission and do what brings you joy.

The telltale signs of stress (it’s not necessarily what you may think!).

5 easy ways to create sustainability and resilience in your life so you don’t become ill and burn out (this is gold!).

Plus there’s a Q & A with us at the end.

Please share this workshop with your friends, I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll be thanking you later!

She told me that one of their mutual friends came up and asked her opinion..

Friend: “Do you think ‘crying girl’ should have been that upset?!”…(the suggestion was that she was overreacting and the delivery was inviting gossip).

My daughter: ” I don’t know, because I don’t know how she was feeling inside”. And then they moved on with their day.

Me: Pretty over the moon that my daughter didn’t engage in any judgement or gossip and rather suggested that empathy was required in this situation. If I sound proud, it’s because I am!

Now, I don’t mean to sound all judge-y about gossip because it’s not all black and white. I actually think there’s healthy gossip and not so healthy gossip and many complicated reasons why we do it. It’s a subject I talk to my kids about a lot. My daughter even admits it ‘feels good’ to gossip, and I totally know what she means. Statistics show that women spend five hours a day gossiping! That’s nuts!

Here’s he official definition of gossip as it appears in the Cambridge Dictionary:

conversation or reports about other people’s private lives that might be unkind, disapproving, or not true

Here’s my take on the good, the bad and the ugly of gossip for male, female and all ages …

When gossip can be healthy.

When it helps us fit in with others. We all like the feeling that we belong somewhere.

When we need to process our own experiences, seeking perspective on the matter by confiding in a friend.

It can help us and children figure out peer group relationships, what’s going on with them, who they can trust.

It can create a sense of intimacy.

When we share we gain comfort, compassion, clarity, encouragement, truth and healing.

It’s important to recognise that even when gossip isn’t coming from a mean and nasty place, it can still easily hurt other people’s feelings.

When gossip hurts.

Personal feelings of insecurity or low self-esteem can develop into the more harmful type of gossip.

When gossip forms out of envy, hurt, confusion, and hatred.

When the purpose of gossip is to make you feel better about your own life.

When it harms reputations and feelings.

When you’re sharing unflattering and judgemental information about someone.

When you use it as a way to feel superior to others.

When it leads to conflict.

A recent study in Pediatrics reveals that more teenage girls are suffering from depression than they have at any other point in history—and gossip being shared about them on social media is partly to blame.

How do we become gossipers?

It’s a learned trait, our kids are watching and listening to us. Researchers note that parents who criticise others are more likely to raise aggressive teenagers who instigate fights with their peers and gossip about them.

We hear our friends parents gossip.

We hear older siblings and older kids do it.

We see characters on TV shows engage in gossip.

Our bodies release oxytocin, the pleasure hormone, when we gossip, so we seek out more.

Before you engage in gossip next time, ask yourself …’Why am I sharing this? What is my goal?’, and just by taking that moment you will be able to decide if it’s the good gossip or the bad kind. Ask your kids to do the same.
